Case StudiesHS2 Project

HS2 Project

HS2 project decreased rejected loads in high-stakes builds by digitizing quality control.

2.5-0.4%
average decrease in rejected loads per site
30%+
reduction in operational time for large pours
7000 TONS
of CO₂ saved from reduced concrete testing alone
4,664 m³
reduction in sampling waste

HS2 high speed rail road is currently the UK’s largest infrastructure project. Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV), the project construction partner, along with Tarmac and Aggregate Industries have embraced innovation in concrete testing by adopting Verifi® for HS2.

HS2 faced several challenges due to the level of sampling required. Mandated slump tests to be taken on every load of concrete delivered created significant resourcing challenges for HS2,  including staffing requirements to cover large levels of sampling across multiple pours, safety concerns from the increase in plant / person interface and manual handling, and high wasted concrete due to sampling every load on site.

HS2 needed to drive total visibility, better compliance and other value benefits to their client while not compromising concrete quality.

We have set big ambitions to drastically cut carbon as we build HS2, and digital surveillance solutions support us on this journey, not only bringing multiple benefits to the project, but paving the way for a new era in the construction industry.Jon Knights - HS2, Materials and Durability Lead
